What does a smoky barbeque, a used cigarette butt, and fresh asphalt have to do with tea?
Nothing, unless the tea in question is Lapsang Souchong, a Chinese tea that has been smoked over pine needles.
The intense smoky smell and flavor can be a bit much, even for many seasoned veterans of tea appreciation, but for those who need their Lapsang Souchong fix, no substitute will do (though drinking an infusion of crispy bacon while inhaling the aroma of road resurfacing might come close).
Lapsang Souchong, by definition, is a tea that you must either love or hate; personally, I love it (with sugar but definitely not with milk). How do you love your Lapsang?
