Poetry

My favorite poet in the tea poem genre is Dr. Marc Hofstadter. A number of his poems are featured in the book Steeped in the World of Tea, which I reviewed in a previous blog. His poems featured in Steeped include short four to six line poems about the following teas, which are also the titles of the poems:

  • Monkey-Picked Oolong,
  • Extra Malty Assam,
  • Lapsang Souchong,
  • Tie Kuan Yin.

At Tea and Treasure in Coupeville, Washington, I have a binder by the cash register with “Write a Poem!” written on the spine. The poems must be written in the tea shop but don’t have to have anything to do with tea. So far, though, two people did write about tea. Time Starts with Tea is by Patricia Moretz and Grace Tarasoff wrote A Cup of Tea. This binder is available to all who come into the store and is separate from our poetry club.

Tea & Treasure’s poetry club will be named at our next meeting this coming Friday, May 7, and new poems by the founding members will be read. Everyone’s welcome.

In February a lady came into my store, made herself a cup of tea, and then asked for a sheet of paper so that she could write a poem. I did better than just one sheet of paper, creating a binder for her and for those who might follow in her footsteps and write some spontaneous tea poetry.

She titled her poem, “Time starts with tea“.

The next month a young girl came in with her parents and added a second poem to the binder, “A Cup of Tea“.

Both poems were written on the spot, inspired by the tea the poets were sipping.

This coming Friday, April 9, 2010, at 6pm, the first poetry club meeting will take place at Tea & Treasure. Where it will lead, and what it will lead to, remains to be seen, but an inspirational cup of tea will be on the house.

If you’re an aspiring poet and you can’t physically make it to Coupeville, send me a poem and I’ll unveil it at the meeting.
